New trends to try: Mary Janes

Our New Collection is bursting with style and colour for the cooler months ahead, and one style trend being embraced wholeheartedly is the return of the Mary Jane shoe. Shoes are certainly having a moment this season, and they’re offering lots of versatility and difference to our wardrobes. Let’s look at how we’re wearing Mary Jane shoes in 2024, and you may be inspired to revisit them from your past!

The Mary Jane is a style characterised by a low-cut closed toe with one or more straps across the instep. Making their debut in the 1900s, the Mary Jane came to be when the Brown Shoe Company from Missouri named their T-bar shoes after a cartoon character named Mary Jane.

There are benefits to wearing a Mary Jane shoe. The straps offer support and a better fit for your foot without any slipping.

The Mary Jane style has evolved over the years, starting out with a chunky heel and exaggerated buckles, to finer silhouettes and thinner straps (some with multiple over the instep).

Let’s look at the options this season.

The Neo 23576 dark green displays a feminine style reminiscent of the earlier versions.

Hispanitas Dalia taupe has a slimmer silhouette with a thin two-strap design, finer heel and pointed toe for a feminine touch.

Both Dansi 5981 bronze and Hispanitas Manila Black feature a low block heel, which provides a wider surface area f0r your foot and offers better support and balance for your feet.

The Hispanitas Monaco black steps away from the traditional one or two strap versions, instead with a T-bar strap and slightly higher block heel.

Mixing casual and laid-back clothing styles with dressier pieces from your wardrobe is a key trend for 2024 dressing, and the Mary Jane fits seamlessly into multiple outfits and looks heading into Winter and onto Spring.

Team your Mary Jane shoes with denim, adding an oversize shirt, blazer or knit to combine the casual with chic. Alternatively, wear your Mary Jane shoes with a casual dress, such as a smock style; or opt for a tailored trouser with a simple white t-shirt.

Complete your outfit with a handbag from the Hispanitas range.
