Your complete guide to selecting a perfect pair of sandals

by Dianne Sheehan, Owner/Manager

Shopping for sandals can be a daunting task. I know when selecting our range for our Spring/Summer collections, there’s always so many more options to think about – what colours to get, heel heights, suede or smooth leather, Velcro, laces or buckle fastenings, patterns or plain. The list goes on!

Let me take you through our collection, looking at the features of various styles, covering fit and design to help you make your choice easier (or, maybe more difficult!).

Complete cover

Fully covered in sandals are the preferred summer footwear option by many, and we have a couple of brands that do this type of sandal well. They are Pikolinos and Josef Seibel. Sandal varieties from these brands offer coverage over the toes and around the back of the heel for stability and support. They’re both a wide C fit, and they're well known for their comfort.

Extra width

If finding that pair of sandals that offers extra width is difficult, let me group a few together that might work well for you. For casual wear, our Ara range of sandals come in their standard wide ‘G’ fit. These include 17272 (pictured in bronze & coral), 38041, 36017, 14738 and 35917 (pictured below in navy).

The sandal which has the widest fit throughout the footbed is Plakton’s Pia sandal (pictured below) in taupe or yellow. These also feature a footbed similar to a Birkenstock, with arch support and a footbed that cradles the foot.

For something a little more dressy, our Sempre Di 9068 sandals in nude or navy (pictured below) offer a very wide strap across the front of the foot. This strap is wide in all dimensions and finishes above where any bunions are, avoiding any strap irritation.

Velcro’s not just for Nan

Velcro often gets a bad wrap – associated with ‘Nanna’ shoes or kids shoes. But, Velcro is finding its way into Fendi, Gucci and our very own United Nude runway collections, particularly when it comes to the sporty sandal styles (read blog post here about this trend) and sneakers.

Some of our most loved brands are incorporating Velcro into their styles effortlessly. One of my favourite sandals this season is Hispanitas’s Atenas range. The black and honey sandals offer a classic style with a simple Velcro fastening around the back of the heel. They’re elegant and fashionable and an easy style to wear all day with the small heel. I have a pair in both colours!

Iconic and edgy brand, Fly London, also incorporate Velcro in their sandals, offering convenience without compromising on look. The Pona sandal is a great workwear option, featuring a small peep-toe and enclosed heel on their signature wedge sole. Wear with trousers or work skirts.

Adjustable in all areas

If you’re someone who loves total control over how your summer sandals fit your feet, then we have a few options available.

Hirica Laurette is your best choice for all-day comfort that would work well with casual wear or a dress. The cotton laces and leather straps are all adjustable to the shape and width of your foot. They also work well to move around problem areas, such as bunions or a high instep due to their fully adjustable upper. Not to mention, these are incredibly lightweight and cushioned underfoot.

Paula Urban’s Penni sandal (above) offers adjustment across both straps, featuring a Velcro fastening. This sandal works especially well to hide bunions due to its thick strap over the front of the foot. Featuring a metallic nude, white and silver snake print, these could easily be worn out to dinner in the evening as well as through the day.

Finally, for a bold look the Fly London Calo and United Nude Delta Run sandals offer a bold look that’s young, fresh and fashionable. Wear with wide leg culottes or a statement dress.
